First created in 1891 and renamed after a French aviator in 1927, Roland Garros has since become a world-class international tennis tournament. The second tournament in the Grand Slam, it is held every year in the last week of May and the first week of June at Porte d’Auteuil, Paris.
This annual tournament is one of the key sporting events on the French calendar and a beacon for French expertise in sports events.
The 2023 edition reached almost 40.6 million unique viewers on France Télévisions channels, and abroad drew in a record 90 million unique viewers in China on the channel CCTV.
According to official Roland Garros figures, a record 633,222 spectators attended matches at the Porte d’Auteuil site over the two weeks of the event.
Roland Garros is also extremely profitable for the economy. According to specialist website Capital, the 2022 edition of Roland Garros generated over €300M in profits. These profits came from various sources:
- TV rights: €114M (37%)
- Partnerships and sponsorships: €60M (19%)
- Accommodation and catering: €56M (18%)
- Ticket sales: €55M (17%)
- Tie-in products: €23M (7%)
According to French newspaper Le Parisien, over 4,700 people are employed for the event every year to ensure its smooth running.
